Reuse or recycle?

We firmly agree that recyclable packaging is an absolute necessity if we are to minimise the waste that is either buried for future generations to worry about, burned further adding to CO2 in the air (among other things) or dumped into the rivers that end up in the seas.

However, while recycling is necessary it is also wasteful.

Recycling anything requires a person (or people) to collect it, usually in diesel burning lorries, it needs to be separated, cleaned using water, heated using energy then made into something which can then be remelted into something usable.
Its a BIG process, that's laborious and energy consuming.

We believe the answer is REUSE.

As much as possible.

We, the single use generation, don't look at items for what they can be used for after and mindlessly dump items into the recycling bin and forget them. We then think we've done our bit. The councils have reduced our waste bin sizes to make us recycle but have they done enough to encourage us to actually think about what we put into those green boxes on recycling day.

Walk the aisles of your local supermarket and you'll find jars for sale for more than the price of a reusable jar filled with a delicious foodstuff!
Buy a jar of my daughters favourite pasta bake for a pound and you have a brilliantly reusable and SOLID glass jar capable of holding any number of items that need to be stored airtight… coffee for instance.

We support other businesses that have the same ethos and we're happy to share links to these businesses here.

Raphael's Mediterranean foods for example offers some of the best tasting food ever and all of the products are packed in glass jars which can be reused, the teas and herbs they offer are packed in similar reusable plastic bags to our coffee bags and they are just as keen to see the packaging reused.
So much so that when founder Zoi Baldry recently donated food items to a local charity her only stipulation was that the people using them be encouraged to reuse the jars or donate them (clean) to a refillable store.

Refillable stores are popping up all over the UK and are a brilliant way of buying only what you need. So whereas the ingredients for your favourite recipe may be slightly more expensive per kg, you don't be 2:3 more than you actually need to sit in your cupboard.
How many times do you need 300g of flour and the only size on offer is 500g? Which means next time you're 100g short!

Refillable shops are also offering things such as hair shampoo, detergent and lipstick!

We are proud to be unified in the mission to reuse with these similarly minded businesses!
