What Makes Us Different?!
Set up in 2023, with this website first published during the weekend of the new Kings Coronation celebrations, we are committed to be sustainable and world first not just world class.
We know that we have some of the very best quality coffee you can buy in the world. We are 100% committed to supplying you with beans that will taste good enough to be served at Buckingham Palace- but under the reign of our new monarch taste alone isn't good enough and we think we offer the solution for His Majesty and our United Kingdom.
Founder of RePodly, Gary has been a coffee enthusiast for decades. "I believe in the power to do good while enjoying great product. I don't want our coffee to be consumed because of its green merits but because it's truly delicious and high quality but then enjoyed more for the good being done as well. I have long been a lover of the story of the enlightenment period, the idea that a drink that was affordable and stimulating brought people who may never have met and inspired their collaboration and creativity and doing so much good in the world. Coffee was the catalyst of the enlightenment and many of the things we take for granted today and I believe we should continue in that spirit"
This isn't just a sales patter. Aside from great coffee, this is what we are doing:
1. We sell reusable and recyclable surgical grade stainless steel coffee pods.
These produce top quality coffee when used in conjunction with our top quality coffee. Use them with inferior coffee… you won't get the same result.
So stop filling the landfill with unsustainable pods made from a mixture of hard to separate and recycle materials: make the switch to our reusable pods.
2. We promise to plant a tree somewhere in the world for every sale.
Not every order, every sale. Buy 3 bags of coffee and you planted 3 trees.
No need to opt in, no additional cost to you and no tricky legal jargon. We do this all for you.
We carefully consider a number of factors when deciding where to plant your trees. We consider the monetary value, environmental value and ongoing good. For example if a woodland is planted in an area where the people have no value associated with it then it is unlikely to be cared for or considered in future, whereas if the woodland provides jobs and income to an area then it has more of a chance to continue and be tended by local people.
3. Delivery is by Royal Mail and DPD only.
This is because they are some of the greenest delivery services in the country. They also actually deliver reliably…
4. We source our pods and some smaller merchandise directly from the source to you.
Why is this green? If we have a warehouse filled with a pod that isn't as popular as another we have to pay to store that pod in a warehouse that could be used for something else.
If the pods come directly from the manufacturer then the pod is packaged in its factory of origin, comes via commercial flights that will be flown wether there is anyone on board or not and then delivered in the UK via Royal Mail which we noted previously is one of the greenest services in the country.
5. Education
We have details on the site on how to use your coffee after it's been brewed that is great for your garden and great for the earth. Instead of chucking it in the bin your grounds full of nitrogen are much better put to use by plants.
6. Packaging options.
As part of our commitment to education on sustainability we show you how to reuse (which is better than recycling) your coffee bags. We also offer paper coffee bags, but we are also committed to educating you as to why this may not be the best solution for you or the planet.
In short- paper is from felled trees, the coffee doesn't stay fresh in it and it cannot be reused after.
7. We are a small, UK based, tax paying business.
We aren't offshore. We don't send the profits abroad and we pay our taxes here to the UK government.
8. Ethically traded coffee beans
It goes without saying, our coffee beans are traceable (as all beans traded in the UK should be) although not fair trade. This is for a few reasons but mostly because we believe in paying more for great quality beans and the fair trade initiative rewards poor quality. Our beans are guaranteed to be slavery free- because we're about taking the guilt out of your cup. Quality and ethical beans.
9. Last and by no means least… Leukaemia UK.
When we learned of our friend's toddler being diagnosed with Leukaemia and her pledge to raise money to fight the cancer we made a pledge of our own.
Our pledge is this 'as long as we sell coffee, as long as Leukaemia needs our help and as long as people want to buy it we will sell coffee bags that we will donate 100% of the profit to Leukaemia UK as part of the "Pants to Leukaemia" Campaign started by Hannah Peckham'.
Inspiration and Dedication
We were inspired to launch RePodly by His Majesty King Charles III and his stance on planet first commerce. The King has advocated for the planet and in particular against disposable products since 1970. You can find out more by reading about the Sustainable Markets Initiative here.
We've also been inspired, like many, by the tireless, dedicated work of Sir David Attenborough who has committed himself into his late 90's to help us all understand the impact we are having on our environment and the natural world. We hope that the trees we plant will help to recover some of the countless species pushed to extinction by loss of habitat around the world and the biodiversity needed for a healthy planet. You can find out more by watching Sir Davids Netflix special or any number of his inspiring series on our BBC.
We've also been lifelong fans of the musical legend Sir Paul McCartney and have been inspired by his work over the years with PETA and also to promote Meat Free Mondays. Our species has never eaten as much meat in its diet as it does today. Farming of meat producing animals is extremely bad for the environment as well as our longterm health. While our founder Gary has been vegetarian for almost 30 years this is not an effort to convert people to vegetarianism on his part. Gary says "being vegetarian is a personal choice for me and my children are not, (vegetarians) but do eat a wide range of plant based foods which is healthy for them and hopefully for the planet we live on".
You can read more about Meat Free Mondays here.
Recently we've also been shocked and inspired by the insightful and incredibly readable book by Dr Chris van Tulleken, Ultra Processed People. While the subject of the book is weighty it is discussed in a non preachy and accessible way, forcing us to question what is in our "food", on our plates and in our cups. We are proud that our coffee hasn't been processed in any other way than roasting and that we aren't tricking our tastebuds and bodies with clever tricks. None of our products are, or ever shall be played with, manipulated or otherwise ultra processed. Get a very interesting head start here.
It may go without saying and be obvious to most, but we are not affiliated with His Majesty the King, Sir David Attenborough or Sir Paul McCartney other than being grateful for their messages and inspired to act on them. We would be thrilled to hear from anyone representing this trio and to further help in anyway we can.
